Processor (CPU)
The 'brain' of the computer, one of the major components that determine a computers performance.
What is a CPU and what does it do? The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the 'brain of the computer, it lets the other components of the computer know what they have to do. It is one of the major components that determines a computers performance.
Why do I need one? Having a better CPU (measured in GigaHertz) greatly improves the overall speed of your computer. The faster the Processors speed, the more calculations your computer can do in a short space of time. This means your computer can handle multiple Applications and data simultaneously.
What is available and what are the benefits of each? There are two ranges of processors, AMD & Intel. Within here there are several types of processor which you can choose from.
Single Core Processors: Have one "core" allowing them to process sets of instructions as they are transmitted to the CPU.
Dual Core processors: Have 2 "Cores" that allow processing of multiple instructions at the same time.
Quad Core Processors: Have 4 "Cores" that allow even greater processing of multiple instructions at the same time, greatly improving computer performance.
Processors range in speed from around 1.5 Ghz to around 4 Ghz and when matched with the right motherboard and RAM can create an extremely fast computer.
How do I know what I need? This is dependent on the type of motherboard you have if you are replacing your CPU. If you are upgrading you must choose a motherboard and CPU that are compatible as they go hand in hand with each other. Intel processors are not compatible with AMD motherboard and visa versa. You must choose the right CPU for the motherboard that you have or plan to use, depending on whether you are replacing an existing CPU or upgrading to a new CPU. As well as brand the type of CPU is very important, motherboard are specifically designed for use with either single, dual or multiple core processors. This is clearly described in the product specification.
Single core processors are perfect for day to day word processing and Internet browsing. Dual core processors are a better choice for handling graphic intensive programs such as video editing and Games.
Quad and multiple core processors are brilliant at processing massive loads very quickly, a must for Gamers and those who require a really fast computer.
