Sound Card
Enables the computer to reproduce sound.
What is a Sound card and what does it do? It enables the computer to reproduce sound through either plug in speakers or headphones.
Why do I need one? Some computers come with a "built in" sound card already on the motherboard. This can provide basic sound through a set of speakers or headphones. However, if you were to install a separate sound card, you can enhance the level of sound quality available and provide a greater experience for the listener.
What is available and what are the benefits of each? A separate dedicated sound card will improve the multimedia experience and benefit those wanting to listen to music, watch movies and play games. Most sound cards now provide connectivity for 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound. 5.1 systems will allow 5 speakers and a subwoofer to be connected to the card whilst a 7.1 compatible sound card will allow 7 speakers and a subwoofer to be connected to your computer.
Sound cards are also available as an external type which connects via USB for those who dont have space inside their computer for an internal sound card.
How do I know what I need? This depends on the number of speakers you wish to connect and the quality of sound you wish to achieve. An internal 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound card will produce sound much more efficiently than a lower quality 2.1 system or built in motherboard sound card.
